No response when called whilst off the lead
There are lots of reasons why your puppy or dog will not respond to your recall command.
Questions need to be asked whether the dog in question has been, or is going, to training classes and what these classes were or are like?
How much exercise is given and what is the amount of time spent on training?
How the handler reacts when the dog returns?
Are there distractions? It is hard for a puppy or dog to ignore the prescence of other dogs, and often want to make contact.
Does the dog or puppy have a high chase drive and therefore want to chase every jogger and cyclist across the park?
It is necessary to look at what is causing the dog or puppy to ignore your recalls and treat this which will then result in a better recall.
With all behaviour or training problems there is never one cause found and therefore one solution can't be provided. A good behaviourist will always want to meet the dog or puppy with their owner and see the problem for themselves.
