Soiling Indoors
Is this due to a medical problem? A previously clean dog who has now begun to toilet indoors, especially if this is combined with a high thirst, should always be checked out by their Vet prior to any behaviour modification being undertaken.
A behaviourist should always make sure a dog has a clean bill of health before commencing behaviour treatment.
Once this has been done then a behaviourst will check the routine of the dog. Does the dog no longer have ready access to his or her garden so therefore only has the option to soil indoors?
Is outside now a scary option, dogs can become scared of outdoors, especially around firework night, if they are not comfortable with going outside they made use indoors as an area where they feel more secure.
How is the owner cleaning the area? Some products will mask the smell of urine to us but will leave a scent which can be detected by a dog. Dogs are creatures of habit and so once they have defined an area indoors as their toilet area is becomes difficult to irradicate.
Is the dog stressed when left? Anxiety causes a loss of bladder and bowel control so a dog who is unhappy about being left could soil indoors.
Where is the dog soiling and when?
It is again vital that the reasons are found for the soiling, once these are found and corrected the soiling should stop.
